International Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set

The International Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set is a computer encoding for the unification of usage of Tibetan language in the world. It was designed to promote the development of Tibetan information technology and Tibetan-language informatization globally. Without the International Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set, many of the world's big companies, such as Microsoft, Apple and Google, are unlikely to support Tibetan in their products because they only support languages with the international standard encoded character set. In this way, Tibetan wouldn’t be gotten chance to be developed in the computer world.

September of 1997, China submitted the National Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set to the International Standardization Organization for International Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set. In accordance with China's national standard for Tibetan encoded character set, ISO formulated the International Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set, which is Tibetan encoding in ISO10646. Since then, Tibetan language has the international standard for computer encoded character set, a solid foundation for Tibetan language to be stayed close with the entire world through the computer and network world.

The Tibetan encoding character set in the international standard ISO10646 was basically formulated according to the academic paper published in 1995 by yalasoo’s key member Mr. Tashi Tsering, which was entitled as "On The International Standard for Tibetan Computer Encoded Character Set". The paper is the only academic article so far that related to the study of Tibetan encoding standard.

The research project on Tibetan encoded character set for the international standard of ISO10646 was funded by the Chinese government.
